From Bedrock to Bottle: Geology in the Glass

Monday, 17 August | 1:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. | George R. Brown Convention Center

Experience a one-of-a-kind wine tasting designed exclusively for the geoscience community. From Bedrock to Bottle blends premium wine exploration with the geological principles that shape some of the world’s most distinctive wine regions.

Through six curated wines from around the globe, participants will taste firsthand how geology influences terroir, vine behavior, and wine character. From volcanic soils to limestone-rich terrains, each pour tells the story of the earth beneath the vineyard—and how it ultimately ends up in the glass.

This interactive and social experience combines guided tastings, geological storytelling, visual maps and imagery, and informal networking in a relaxed setting. Whether you are a wine enthusiast, a geology lover, or simply curious about the connection between earth science and agriculture, this session offers a memorable and engaging perspective on both disciplines.

• Volcanic terrains with basaltic and ash-derived soils
• Iron-rich red soils and weathered formations
• Limestone and calcareous sedimentary systems
• Granitic and metamorphic basement rocks
• Glacial, lacustrine, and alluvial deposits

Participants will explore how factors such as mineral composition, drainage, heat retention, porosity, and weathering influence vineyard development and wine expression across global wine regions.

This premium event is designed to balance education, tasting, conversation, and networking in an approachable and enjoyable atmosphere.
