Babak Shafei is the founder and CEO of AquaNRG, an environmental and energy tech company
headquartered in Houston, TX. AquaNRG has been awarded 3 Small Business Innovation
Research grants from the US DOE and NSF ($1.4M). It offers the next-generation diagnostic and
predictive tool, i.e. aiRockTM, for complex geoenergy and environmental applications such as
CCUS, geothermal, IOR/EOR, and energy storage. aiRockTM is the first and only SaaS application
which merges AI and high-performance cloud computing for biogeochemical and multiscale
reactive transport modeling.

He has more than 15 years of experience consulting global E&P, nuclear waste management,
and mining companies as well as World Bank on strategies for sustainable energy production and
storage while minimizing negative environmental impacts.

Babak holds Ph.D. in earth and environmental sciences from Georgia Tech where his thesis
received “Research Excellence Award”. In 2007, he was appointed as a visiting scholar at Utrecht
University in the Netherlands and ETH Zurich in Switzerland under prestigious Marie Curie
fellowship from the European Commission.
