Short Course

SC-05: Forensic Data Processing

Sunday, 24 August | 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. | George R. Brown Convention Center

Sponsored by the SEG DISC

The goal of this course is to teach you to think more critically about your seismic data and how you process it. If I've done my job properly, each chapter should leave your brain hurting just a bit by the end, hopefully in a good way. A theme that will keep coming up is “you probably aren't paranoid enough.”

Anyone who processes seismic data to produce subsurface images, especially people wanting to create new and better seismic-imaging algorithms.
Part I: This part of the course teaches techniques for investigating the layers of signal and noise that are present in our seismic data.

- Miscellaneous adventures in seismic data processing
- A review of Fourier analysis
- A data processor’s introduction to air guns as a seismic source
- How to process seismic data without losing its units
- Ocean Acousticians' vs SEG's amplitude standards
- The various sources of noise in marine seismic data

Part II: Case studies where we apply what we learned in Part 1:

- The Green Canyon Earthquake dataset
- The Valhall “Life of Field Seismic” Ocean-bottom-cable datasets

Part III: Tips for how to think more clearly about your data:

- Common data-processing blunders to watch out for
- Common data-processing misconceptions to avoid
- My suggestions on where to look for the next breakthroughs
